Our Community Stories

UPPCO helps local communities because we believe "It's Worth the Energy." When we share our time, knowledge and resources, we help sustain our communities and enrich our neighbors' lives. Here are some examples.

Ishpeming Beautified by Tree Partnership

Our Community Stories

Ishpeming is an even more beautiful community these days thanks to an Arbor Day tree partnership between UPPCO, the Rotary Club, Loy's Lawns and the City.

The partnership began five years ago with UPPCO buying several types of trees, and Ishpeming's Rotary Club working with Loy's Lawns to plant the trees in areas designated by the City as being in need.

Beautiful trees have now been planted in Ishpeming: on Lake Street, in the downtown area, in front of the community hospital and in area parks.

UPPCO Schools Receive High Marks

Our Community Stories

In 2009, U.S. News and World Report again worked with a school evaluation service to analyze academic and enrollment data from more than 21,000 public high schools to find the best in the country. The top schools were placed into Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable Mention categories.

The study was based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are college-bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.

Dan Crane, UPPCO account executive, is also president of the School Board at Houghton High School, which received a Silver rating. HHS added a new gymnasium and music area in 2009.
