While PEV owners can expect to see an increase in their electric bill, the increase will vary depending on the amount the vehicle is driven and how the vehicle is charged. Because gasoline and diesel prices outweigh that of electricity as a transportation fuel, you'll save money using electricity to power your vehicle.
The following is a graph showing the monthly gasoline prices since 1970 vs. pricing of electricity for the same timeframe in dollars per gallon equivalent.
* Based on a plug-in electric vehicle with an efficiency of 3.4 miles per kWh (like the Nissan Leaf) and an internal combustion engine vehicle with a 30 mpg rating.
