Customer-Owned (Parallel) Generation

Customers have the option to install their own on-site electricity generating systems, such as wind turbines, solar photovoltaic systems or biogas systems, and connect them to the Upper Peninsula Power Company distribution system. This process is called "interconnection."

UPPCO is committed to making the interconnection process as easy for our customers as possible. At the same time, the process must be conducted in a manner that is safe and cost-effective for UPPCO and our customers.

The following information will guide you through the steps and requirements necessary to interconnect a parallel system to the UPPCO electric distribution system.

For Systems 30kW or Less

  1. Start the Interconnection Process

Contact Kevin Pitts to review your project:
    Phone: 920-433-4964
    E-mail: klpitts@wisconsinpublicservice.com
  2. Review and Understand the Rates and Requirements
  3. Complete Interconnection Application

Complete and submit the Michigan Generator Interconnection Application, with the applicable review fee, to:

    Attn: Kevin Pitts
    Upper Peninsula Power Company
    P.O. Box 19007
    Green Bay, WI 54307-9007
  4. Application Review
Your application will be reviewed by UPPCO to determine if it contains all of the information required to begin the interconnection process. You will then be notified by UPPCO regarding the status of your application. If the application is incomplete, additional information will be requested.
  5. Determine if Distribution Study is Needed

After your application is considered complete, UPPCO will determine if a distribution study is needed. This study is to assess the level of impact your system will have once connected to our grid.

If the study is required, you will be notified with the cost of that study. Upon written authorization to proceed, and payment of the applicable fee, we will complete the distribution study.
  6. Discuss Distribution Study and Review Interconnection Options & Costs

Once the study is complete, UPPCO will contact you to discuss all of the options available — along with their associated costs — and the project timeline for the interconnection of your parallel generation system.
  7. Installation of parallel generation and Distribution System Upgrades

You will need to install your generating equipment within a mutually agreed upon timeframe. After receipt of payment for the agreed-upon interconnection costs, we will perform all work needed to upgrade our distribution system to accommodate your parallel generation system.
  8. System Testing

When the installation of your system is complete, UPPCO must be notified and given the opportunity to witness or verify the system testing. This could include:

    • Witnessing commissioning tests;
    • Performing anti-islanding tests; or
    • Verifying the protective equipment settings
  9. Interconnection Agreement

Before parallel operation can begin, a Generator Interconnection and Operating Agreement will need to be completed and signed by the applicant and Upper Peninsula Power Company.
