Appliances - Indoor Safety
Purpose - Gas and electric appliances make life convenient. They are used to heat water, wash laundry, cook dinner, dry your hair, or even provide family entertainment.
Dangers - Electrical fires, electric shocks, gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning.
Prevention -
- Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Only use appliances that have an Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label.
- Keep small appliances away from bath tubs, showers, or swimming pools.
- If an appliance is not working correctly, stop using it. Get it fixed.
Emergency - Follow the Emergency Procedures if:
- There is an electrical fire.
- Someone gets shocked.
- You smell gas
- You suspect carbon monoxide poisoning
Water heaters -
- To prevent scalding, water heaters should be set no higher than 120° F.
- Steps 2, 3, and 4 of the eight-point furnace check should also be done on gas water heaters.
Large appliances -
- Keep stoves clean.
- Keep a kitchen fire extinguisher handy.
- Keep filters clean. Keep the space underneath free of dust.
- Make sure room air conditioners are plugged into circuits that can handle the load.
Power tools -
- Only use electric tools for their intended purpose.
- If using electric tools outdoors, use proper grounding, exterior extension cords, and GFIC-protected outlets.
