Purpose - Gas and electric appliances make life convenient. They are used to heat water, wash laundry, cook dinner, dry your hair, or even provide family entertainment.

Dangers - Electrical fires, electric shocks, gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning.

Prevention -

  • Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Only use appliances that have an Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label.
  • Keep small appliances away from bath tubs, showers, or swimming pools.
  • If an appliance is not working correctly, stop using it. Get it fixed.

Emergency - Follow the Emergency Procedures if:

  • There is an electrical fire.
  • Someone gets shocked.
  • You smell gas
  • You suspect carbon monoxide poisoning

Water heaters -

  • To prevent scalding, water heaters should be set no higher than 120° F.
  • Steps 2, 3, and 4 of the eight-point furnace check should also be done on gas water heaters.

Large appliances -

  • Keep stoves clean.
  • Keep a kitchen fire extinguisher handy.
  • Keep filters clean. Keep the space underneath free of dust.
  • Make sure room air conditioners are plugged into circuits that can handle the load.

Power tools -

  • Only use electric tools for their intended purpose.
  • If using electric tools outdoors, use proper grounding, exterior extension cords, and GFIC-protected outlets.
