Purpose - Providing a convenient way of controlling electricity, and getting electric power to where you need it.
Dangers - Electrical fires, electric shocks.
Prevention -
- Know where the main electric box is, and how to turn the power off.
- Never overload a circuit.
- Use three-prong grounded cords for devices requiring grounding.
- Never file or cut three-prong or polarized plugs to make them fit.
- Never use frayed, cracked, or damaged electric cords.
Emergency - Follow the Emergency Procedures if:
- There is an electrical fire.
- Someone gets shocked.
Safety Tips -
- If a switch, cord, plug, or outlet is damaged, have it fixed at once. If you don't know how, get a qualified electrician to do it for you.
- If you're constantly blowing a fuse or tripping a circuit breaker, something is wrong. Have the circuit checked promptly.
- Use plastic outlet covers to protect young children. Teach them not to stick objects into outlets.
- Install ground fault interrupter circuits (GFICs) in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor outlets. Test them regularly.
- Water and electricity don't mix. Always dry your hands before using a switch, plug, or outlet. Never use appliances while standing in water.
- Never replace a blown fuse with anything other than a fuse of equal rating.
- Do not run extension cords under rugs or carpets.
