1. Start with how your home performs
The assessment begins with a conversation and a review of your home's energy use. Your energy professional may review your past electric bills to identify seasonal changes or unusual increases in consumption. You'll also have an opportunity to share concerns such as drafty rooms, uneven temperatures, excessive humidity, or other comfort issues. These details help connect your home's energy use with what you're experiencing day to day.
2. Look for opportunities inside your home
Next comes a visual assessment of the areas and equipment that can have the greatest impact on energy use. Your energy professional will look at accessible insulation in areas such as attics, walls and crawlspaces, as well as windows and doors for potential air leaks or other efficiency concerns. Lighting and appliances may also be evaluated as opportunities to reduce unnecessary energy use. The goal is to help you understand where energy may be going and where improvements could make the biggest difference.
3. Evaluate the systems working behind the scenes
Your heating and cooling systems play a major role in your home's comfort and energy consumption. The assessment may include a look at the age and condition of your HVAC equipment, filter cleanliness, and efficiency. Accessible ductwork is also checked for disconnected sections or air leaks that can allow conditioned air to escape before it reaches the rooms where you need it.
